Media & Collaborative Apps

The Media & Collaborative Apps team provides lecture capture, web conferencing support, and media production services, primarily in support of teaching and learning.

Distance Education Classrooms

In partnership with UNM Online and the Center for Digital Learning, Academic Technologies supports multiple distance education classrooms on main campus, North campus, and South campus. Instructors scheduled to teach synchronous online courses use these classrooms to allow off-site students to collaboratively participate in live UNM classes using web conferencing and lecture capture technologies. Students log in at a scheduled time, often weekly, to participate in the course.

Lecture Capture

Initially only available in Distance Education Classrooms and a couple of large lecture halls, Academic Technologies is working on a project this summer to support video lecture capture in large lecture halls across campus.

Video and Audio Tools for Courses

UNM IT Academic Technologies supports media tools that offer secure streaming and media delivery platforms for audio and video content and are integrated with UNM Canvas. Once the media tools are enabled in a course, instructors can upload media and distribute it to their students in a variety of ways depending on the pedagogical goals and/or regulatory and technical requirements of the particular media.

These media tools are often used for sharing content developed by faculty, but they can also be configured to allow students to upload audio and video assignments. The tool allows students to submit files in a broad range of formats, and then encodes them on the server into a common format for ease of instructor viewing and use.

The system has been designed to meet the technical requirements for compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and Copyright laws. While the system can deliver content in compliance with Copyright provisions, instructors are expected to educate themselves about their rights and responsibilities relative to copyrighted content, and use the media tools accordingly.

Web Conferencing

UNM Academic Technologies provides Web Conferencing services to faculty and students via an integrated component in UNM Canvas or directly using Zoom.
